Adding the Mafia 2 DLC Friends for Life add-on to the original game from 2K unlocks a lot of content and lets you alter certain in-game parameters and settings. It also works with Mafia II: Definitive Edition.

Installing Mafia 2 DLC Friends for Life gives you access to a lot of in-game content. For starters, it opens the entire map for you to explore. You can roam freely and explore the fictional Empire Bay, inspired by the United States in either the 1950s summer or the 1940s summer. It also opens locations to the player, ranging from the Supermarket to the Herb Empire Hotel.

Also, the mod inserts 11 bodyguard units you can task with keeping you safe as you walk around the streets or conduct missions. In terms of gameplay, it has a couple of options such as changing the player's skin, removing and adding cops, or toggling invulnerability. Additional animations and controls also improve the experience, such as digging the ground or taking an item from a bag or a case.

As the base mod for other add-ons, such as the Mafia 2 Epilog mod, there are some features unavailable with the Friends for Life base version. Purchasing cars from the dealership or obtaining your license to carry (LTC) firearms do not work here. Additionally, Steam versions of the vanilla game require the player to install Update 5, or the DLC folder patch, or risk crashing the game.
